The pattern uses US crochet terms.
It is worked using linked double crochet stitches and whilst this video should be sufficient to demonstrate these, you can find a full tutorial for the linked double crochet stitch here:
The pattern starts with the magic ring. You can find a tutorial for that here:
Alternatively, you can chain 4 and slip stitch to the first chain to make a loop and work your first round into that loop.
The square is made in rounds without turning. You can repeat round 2 for as many rounds as you want (depending on how big you want your square or squares to be!)
This pattern can be worked in any yarn. I advise going up a couple of hook sizes compared to what is suggested on the yarn ball band.
