Materials
-DK Weight Yarn (see below for yardage requirements)
-Size G-6 (4.00mm) Crochet Hook
-Scissors
-Yarn Needle (optional for joining squares)
Gauge
20 sts x 11.5 rows on 4×4″ (10x10cm) square in dc.
Special Pattern Notes
-Due to the effect of the FPtr crosses, which is the unique factor for this square, it looks best to change colors every round (except Rounds 1 & 2 can be the same color without causing an effect issue).
-The pattern is essentially repeating two types of round (corner crosses on odd rounds and mid-span crosses on even rounds), so you can choose to stop crocheting when the square is your desired size. However, I do recommend you end with an odd round because the mid-span crosses slightly distort the edges until an odd round is added.
Yarn Requirements
The Criss Cross Applesauce granny square is designed to be colorful and the color combinations are limited only by your imagination. To calculate your yarn requirements, please see below for the list of approximate yardages needed for each round. You’ll need to determine your color scheme and add the round yardages for each color you are using, then times that number by the number of squares you are making. I have a fill-in calculator on the pattern page at to make calculating your yarn requirements easier.
Round 1: 0.75 yds (0.69 m)
Round 2: 1.25 yds (1.14 m)
Round 3: 2.75 yds (2.51 m)
Round 4: 4.25 yds (3.89 m)
Round 5: 5.75 yds (5.26 m)
Round 6: 7.25 yds (6.63 m)
Round 7: 8.75 yds (8.00 m)
Round 8: 10.25 yds (9.37 m)
Round 9: 11.75 yds (10.74 m)
Yarn Calculation Example
Color A – Rounds 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 would be .75 +1.25 + 4.25 + 7.25 + 10.25 = 23.75 yds per one 9-round square.
Color B – Rounds 3, 5, 7, 9 would be 2.75 + 5.75 + 8.75 + 11.75 = 29 yds per one 9-round square.
If I’m making 10 squares, I would need 237.5 yds of Color A (23.75 x 10) and 290 yds of Color B (29 x 10).
